What AI Workflow Readiness Means
AI workflow readiness means your business has:
- Clean, documented processes. You know exactly how the current workflow works.
- Defined inputs and outputs. You know what data goes in and what should come out.
- Quality standards. You know what "good enough" looks like.
- Approval paths. You know who signs off on the AI's work.
- Failure plans. You know what happens when the AI gets it wrong.
If any of these is missing, you are not ready. Your AI automation will fail silently — because the broken parts of the process get scaled right along with the rest.
The 5-Question Readiness Check
1. Can you describe your current workflow in one paragraph?
If you cannot write down exactly how the task is done today, step by step, with names and handoffs, you cannot automate it. AI does not fix undefined processes. It scales them — including the broken parts.
2. Do you have documented SOPs?
Standard Operating Procedures are the foundation of AI automation. If your SOPs exist only in someone's head, the AI will have nothing to follow. Write them down first.
3. What happens when the current process fails?
If a human makes a mistake in your current workflow, what is the impact? If the answer is "a customer leaves" or "we lose money," you need extra safeguards before AI takes over.
4. Who owns the outcome?
If the AI produces wrong results, who is responsible? If you cannot name a person, you are not ready. Every automated workflow needs an owner.
5. How will you measure success?
What KPI tells you the AI is doing a good job? If you do not have a baseline metric, you will not know if automation improved things or made them worse.
